Pneumatic impact drilling (DTH) method is widely used not only in the construction of foundations in civil construction, but also in the implementation of infrastructure projects. The greatest benefit and economic effect can be obtained when there is a combination of several factors, such as: difficult and rocky soils, the risk of shifting layers or landslides, tight deadlines for work.

In most cases, infrastructure projects have one or more of the above factors. During the Transport Week 2022, which was held in Moscow in November this year, we discussed with the participants the risks and challenges faced by road workers during the implementation of their projects.

The construction of bridge supports and support walls are the most interesting stages of construction, where the technology of pneumatic impact drilling (DTH) shows the best efficiency. Large diameters, up to 1500 mm, the presence of boulders in the soil or monolithic rock, as well as very tight project deadlines, play against drillers. Pneumatic impact drilling, with properly selected equipment and tools, greatly simplifies the work of the contractor, because the penetration rate is 3-4 times higher than traditional drilling methods, and the reliability of the method allows you to drill even the most durable rocks without problems.

Of course, in general, you need to look at the economic efficiency before choosing a drilling method. If there are no above-mentioned factors and complications of the project in the form of tight deadlines or the absence of boulders and rocks, then perhaps traditional drilling methods will be the most suitable. After talking with road workers, we identified several regions where pneumatic impact drilling will be most effective, these are: Karelia, with traditionally rocky soils and the Murmansk region, the south of Russia in the Caucasus Mountains, the Urals and the Urals, cities such as Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk and Yekaterinburg and most of the Far East. The above regions have a fairly diverse lithology, which is expressed in the presence of hard and superhard rocks. There are also many other regions where complications in the form of complex soils are possible, so it is important to study the soil structure before starting the project.
